An all-round performance helped J&K register their first Ranji trophy win of the season as the hosts completed eight wicket win against Tripura at Sheri-Kashmir Cricket stadium here on Friday.
The hosts took advantage of the home conditions as Tripura struggled both in batting and bowling department. Although in second inning, led by SK Patel the visitors put on strong resistance but in the end, J&K won the match comfortably on their home turf.
Tripura had ended third days’ play on 233 for the loss of four wickets in second innings, trailing J&K by 85 runs.
Play on Friday started late due to foggy conditions. However, when the action finally began each passing minute added to the anxiousness in J&K team. Though they looked charged up at the start, but with less than day’s play left, and SK Patel and Pratyush Singh going well, J&K team started looking anxious.
The duo of Patel and Pratyush added another 39 runs to total before J&K got the first breakthrough of the day. It was Umar Nazir who took the wicket of Pratyush on the score of 272 runs. Pratyush scored 59 runs off 98 balls before getting out.
Patel joined in middle by SS Ghosh kept the scoreboard ticking. Patel completed his century off 238 balls and in the process also took Tripura over 300 run mark. On the score of 316 runs, Waseem Raza trapped Ghosh LBW and on the same score in next over, Parvez Rasool got the all important wicket of SK Patel. The Tripura wicketkeeper batsman got out after playing a brilliant knock of 112 runs from 257 balls in that included 14 boundaries and 1 six. Parvez Rasool then clean bowled Harmeet Singh on 14.
Waseem Raza completed his five-wicket haul by trapping AK Sarkar LBW. The left arm spinner got the wicket of Mura Singh who scored 19 to wrap up Tripura inning. Raza ended with six wicket haul while as Umar Nazir and Parvez Rasool took two each.
Chasing a target of 40 runs to win, J&K got the winning score for the loss of two wickets. Ian Dev Singh got out for naught in first over while as Paras Sharma got out after scoring 23 from 28 balls. Shubham Khajuria remained unbeaten on 16 while as Irfan Pathan on naught.
J&K’s opening batsman Ahmad Banday for his brilliant hundred (136) in the 1st innings was adjudged ‘Player of the Match’.
J&K skipper Parvez Rasool termed the win as real morale booster for the side and said that it will help team in remainder of the season.
“Team needed this win and it will help us in coming matches. After poor results in the first two matches, suffering the defeat in the first match and conceding first inning lead in the second, players were little down and were in need of performance like this. For this win everyone stood up and contributed. Overall, it is a team win in front of home fans,” he said.

While Ahmad Banday was hero of the first inning in J&K batting, left arm spinner Waseem Raza turned out star performer on the last day of the match to earn J&K first Ranji trophy win of the season.
Banday for his brilliant knock of 136 runs in first inning was adjudged as player of the match, but on the final day it was Waseem Raza show on display with the bowl. In Tripura’s second inning, Raza looked in complete control and broke some important partnerships. He ended the match with 6-wicket haul besides his 45 run-knock with the bat in J&K first inning.
Bonus point missed
In its 8-wicket win against Tripura on the home turf of Sheri-Kashmir Cricket Stadium Sonwar, hosts J&K missed the opportunity of claiming a bonus point.
After being set a target of 40 runs to win by Tripura, J&K needed to overhaul total without loss of any wicket. J&K started the chase with Shubham Khajuria and Ian Dev Singh in absence Ahmad Banday who was injured. J&K hopes of earning extra point were dashed in the very first over when Ian Dev was clean bowled by Mura Singh on fourth ball of the inning for naught. J&K achieved target for the loss of two wickets and failed to get bonus point.
From the match J&K earned six points and that pushed them to fifth place on points table with seven points. Rajasthan is at top of the table with 18 points.
